Film Training Manitoba Announces Luc Montpellier as Master Series 2025 Instructor

Film Training Manitoba (FTM) and our partners are pleased to announce another distinguished Masterclass instructor for 2025, Luc Montpellier.

“FTM is honoured to launch the Manitoba Film Master Series with Cinematographer Luc Montpellier (ASC & CSC). Montpellier has earned an outstanding reputation as a highly skilled professional, and the attendees of these training sessions will receive exceptional learning to develop their jobs and careers within Manitoba’s film industry,” said FTM‘s Executive Director Adam Smoluk.

Luc Montpellier, ASC, CSC, is an award-winning cinematographer with over 25 years of experience bringing to life visions of avant-garde directors such as Guy Maddin, auteur directors such as long-time collaborator Sarah Polley and Clark Johnson, as well as the likes of Emmy-winning directors David Shore and Vince Gilligan.

“Manitoba‘s film industry will be having an exceptional training experience with Cinematographer Luc Montpellier (ASC & CSC) conducting this cutting-edge workforce development session in Winnipeg,” said Canadian Society of Cinematographers Executive Officer Susan Saranchuk. 

FTM annually conducts special master classes with highly innovative film industry professionals. These sessions help develop the skills of Manitoba’s film industry by allowing the instructors to share advice and insights on their careers and experiences.

Saturday, June 28, 2025: Lecture (10:00 AM to 12:00 PM)

Cinematography: From Pre-Production to Post-Production with Luc Montpellier

During this in-depth in-class lecture session, Montpellier will illuminate how to engage in every part of cinematography. Using clips of select projects, Montpellier will discuss the creative elements of cinematography from Pre-production through post. Using personal examples, Montpellier will share his creative process on how to deliver compelling cinematic visuals. Luc Montpellier will provide a lecture on his experiences in cinematography, which will include learning on various digital cameras, lenses, advanced lighting techniques, and camera movement principles. Participants of this lecture will gain theoretical understanding of Montpellier’s approach to cinematography and will receive the opportunity to ask questions in a supportive environment. In addition, Montpellier will share advice and personal experiences to encourage the participants in jobs and careers.

Saturday, June 28, 2025: One-on-Ones (1:00 PM to 7:00 PM)

During the one-on-one session, each participant will receive the opportunity to meet with Montpellier for a 25-minute interactive discussion to discuss career advancement in cinematography.

Sunday, June 29, 2025: Masterclass (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM)

This Masterclass session will be an intensive seminar designed for cinematographers who want to master an intermediate-to advanced skill set. This session will cover the unique attributes of shooting films with Cinematographer Luc Montpellier sharing his experience and insights. This program will also include learning about pre-production, production, and post.

This hands-on session will cover lighting and camera techniques as well as current workflow practices. All necessary equipment is provided.

FTM is a non-for-profit charity and member of the Province of Manitoba’s Sector Council program funded through the Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources. FTM builds a highly skilled and adaptable film industry workforce to support the activities of Manitoba production companies. FTM collaborates and partners with members of the film industry to identify training needs to support workforce development.
