Film Training Manitoba Congratulates Luther Alexander on Reaching 1,000 Miles in One Year

Film Training Manitoba (FTM) proudly extends congratulations to former FTM board member Luther Alexander, who has achieved an incredible milestone—completing 1,000 miles of running within one year. Luther began his running journey in the summer of 2023 and hasn’t looked back since.

Luther Alexander is an Indigenous freelance cinematographer from Minegoziibe Anishinabe (Pine Creek First Nation). Since 2008, his film and photography work in documentary and narrative storytelling has been showcased across festival circuits, streaming platforms, and broadcast networks.

As a board member with both the Winnipeg Film Group and Film Training Manitoba, Luther has championed initiatives that empower Indigenous creatives within the motion picture arts. More recently, his focus on northern Manitoba and isolated Indigenous communities has helped create new local opportunities in the region.

An Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC), Luther helped expand the CSC’s reach beyond Toronto and Vancouver by establishing the first-ever CSC Workshops Masterclass in Winnipeg. The inaugural program, IndigiLens, featured acclaimed cinematographer Luc Montpellier, ASC, CSC, and was designed to provide professional development and knowledge transfer opportunities for Indigenous motion picture artists.

Outside of film, Luther is the co-founder of the H.O.P.E. Movement (Healing Overcomes Past Experiences)—an advocacy and awareness initiative addressing mental health and addictions crises in northern and remote Indigenous communities. In 2025, Luther completed a 770-kilometer Walk and Run from Thompson to Winnipeg under the H.O.P.E. banner, further amplifying dialogue on this urgent issue.

Luther resides in Winnipeg with his growing family and continues to inspire through his commitment to community, creativity, and wellness—both on and off the road.
