Film Training Manitoba’s Transmedia Production Lab

FTM Congratulates the Transmedia Production Lab Participants!

Film Training Manitoba gathered together a group of talented trainees and mentors for a weeklong production experiment designed to help participants explore the creative challenges of developing a multi-platform project from start to finish.

The FTM Transmedia Production Lab saw participants split into two groups, and guided by two new media experts, Tony Walsh and Ryan FitzGerald. Each group consisted of both mentors and trainees working in tandem to produce several short form transmedia project prototypes.

“One of the main goals of the lab is to help producers and crewmembers to better understand digital media platforms. I think this training model opens up a world of digital possibilities”, says Neila Benson, Executive Director of Film Training Manitoba.

This lab was specifically designed for the trainee participants to pair up with mentors in their chosen discipline. Teams worked collaboratively during pre and post-production, providing mentors the opportunity for one-on-one consultations with their trainees.  The following people were chosen after an extensive application process:

Film Training Manitoba announces the Career Focus Program for 2010/2011

Film Training Manitoba is once again accepting applications for our Career Focus Program. As part of FTM’s Work Experience Program, the CFP will provide on-the-job training to new crewmembers. The purpose of this program is to match graduates from a post-secondary institution with production companies and/or film-related businesses such as equipment houses or production facilities.

This program is offered to youth up to the age of 30 (inclusive) and Film Training Manitoba works with production companies to provide participants with a full time, paid internship for a period of up to 8 weeks. All placements will be completed by July 31st, 2011.

“FTM is very excited to once again offer this program. The Career Focus program will allow successful applicants the opportunity to work in the industry under the guidance of dedicated trainers and with the support of FTM,” says Neila Benson, FTM’s Executive Director.

FTM works closely with industry partners to identify departments where labour gaps exist and training is needed. Entry to this program is competitive and successful candidates will be selected based on their application, previous experience and an interview with FTM’s Training Coordinator.

All successful applicants will be required to take an orientation session before their internship begins. Applications are available for download on FTM’s website, www.filmtraining.mb.ca, or can be picked up in person at 100 – 62 Albert Street.

Deadline this Thursday, September 2nd! FTM Transmedia Production Lab

In collaboration with New Media Manitoba, the TPL was designed to explore the creative challenges of developing multiplatform content from the ground up.  Trainees and their mentors will be immersed in an intensive week of practical transmedia production, culminating in the creation of a series of new multiplatform prototypes.  Fundamental concepts underlying transmedia production will be explored, such as:

  • how to manifest a story on different platforms using different strategies
  • the role of the audience and how they experience interactive media
  • the pipeline and workflow of how successful teams work together
  • the important elements of successful convergent media

FACILITATOR

Ryan FitzGerald (ROGUE NATION STUDIO) has taught convergence media (aka; transmedia) nationally for the Cultural Human Resource Council, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and most recently at Melting Silos for the National Film Board. Ryan is the recent winner of the 2010 Rogers and Manitoba Film & Music $15,000 Pitch, presented by On Screen Manitoba.

WHAT’S INVOLVED

Sixteen individuals will be selected to participate in a six-day training lab. The 16 selected participants will be formed into two teams; a mentor team and a trainee team. Each team will envision, produce and give life to five short form transmedia projects.  Teams will work collaboratively during pre and post-production, providing mentors the opportunity for one-on-one consultation with the trainees.  Each day will flow in the following way: delivery of an in-class learning component, planning, shoot, post, and review of each project.

- Lab dates: October 15-21, 2010 (Fri. Oct. 15th and Thurs. Oct. 21st are evenings.  Oct.16th – 20th are full days, 9am – 6pm)

This competition is open to residents of Manitoba only. Previous experience with transmedia is not required.

MENTORS

We are looking for experienced directors, writers, producers, project managers, graphic designers, programmers, and actors from film, television, and new media, who are open to working collaboratively on cross platform content. Mentors will be selected according to each applicant’s demonstrated level of expertise in their field. The mentors will be required to work with, share skills with, and impart knowledge to their equivalent role on the trainee team. The mentors will be required to sign a letter of agreement, and 1-2 page-training summary upon completion of the lab. Mentors will receive an honorarium. Please contact us for details.

We are looking for emerging film and television and new media professionals looking to gain the knowledge and skills to work on Transmedia projects.

Course Fee

The trainees registration fee is $200, payable upon acceptance into the program.

This course has been valued at $2000. Film Training Manitoba is pleased to offer our training at a subsidized cost for the MB film industry.

All applicants must submit a complete package (see application form) by September 2, 2010. A jury of industry professionals will review the application packages and select candidates for both teams. All applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by email.

Super Channel is keeping it real – creating opportunities for feature length documentary filmmakers

EDMONTON July 29, 2010 – Following on the success of the Super Catalyst Emerging Screenwriter Award, Super Channel is keeping it real and now offering opportunities for two documentary director/producer teams with credits in hour-long television, to make the leap to feature length documentaries.

“Super Channel is a proud supporter of Canadian production and is pleased to offer opportunities to those who aspire to produce feature length documentaries,” said Marguerite Pigott, Super Channel Creative Development Group Lead.

The two winning projects will each receive: 15-20 hours of mentorship from a senior documentary producer with experience in feature-length documentaries; $3,000 to be used to attend the Toronto Documentary Forum (TDF) at Hot Docs and to further develop the project; and promotion on the Super Channel website, in the Super Catalyst newsletter and through a nationwide news release.

“We are thrilled that Super Channel is encouraging emerging director/producer teams in the production of feature length documentaries,” Elizabeth Radshaw, TDF Director.

The award program begins in late September, and winners will work with mentors to prepare projects for pitching in time for the TDF in May 2011. Winners will attend the TDF as observers, and use this opportunity to meet with potential broadcasters, executive producers or other potential partners.

ON SCREEN MANITOBA SEEKS ABORIGINAL PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will coordinate and implement initiatives associated with OSM’s Aboriginal Program as well as provide support to the Programs Manager on all matters relating to the Aboriginal Program.This is a full-time position funded by OSM’s ACCESS Project, terminating March 31, 2013.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Description of current scene
The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will create and maintain a database of the Aboriginal cultural entrepreneurs and companies who are currently operating within the Manitoba Screen-based Media Industry. The database will also contain data on resources for Aboriginal entrepreneurs, organizations, and programs within the industry locally and nationally. The database will be used to assess future business and career-development opportunities and help in our goal of increasing Aboriginal participation in Manitoba’s screen-based industries.

Liaise between industry and the Aboriginal community
The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will facilitate communication and interaction between members of the Aboriginal Screen-based Media community and OSM. In addition, the Aboriginal Program Coordinator will assist OSM in liaising with organizations, companies and individuals whose professional interests intersect with those of Aboriginal industry entrepreneurs.

Industry Promotion
The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will promote business and career-development opportunities as well as creative opportunities in the industry through participation in industry conferences, festivals, markets and other community gatherings.

Existing Development Programs
The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will work to increase the number of Aboriginal participants in OSM’s ACCESS Project, focusing on: increased participation in outreach events, funding programs, and marketing initiatives; increased use of the OSM’s resources; and an increased number of career consultations.

Targeted Aboriginal Development
The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will coordinate outreach and marketing events targeted specifically to the needs of the Aboriginal Screen-based Media community.

Sector Development
The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will create material intended to raise awareness of Manitoba’s Aboriginal Screen-based Media scene within the Aboriginal community itself, the industry, and the public at large. This material may include printed material, digital material, web-based promotions, or any other material consistent with OSM’s ACCESS Project.

Delivery
In consultation with the Programs Manager, the Aboriginal Program Coordinator will create a timeline, work plan, critical path and budget for the delivery of the initiatives listed above.

Reporting
Brief progress reports and updates will be given at all OSM staff meetings. In addition, regular written reports consistent with the needs of key stakeholders and funders for this initiative will be submitted to OSM’s Programs Manager. The Aboriginal Program Coordinator will also prepare regular cash flow and cost reports as needed. All financial and narrative reporting will be undertaken according to the requirements of OSM’s Programs Manager.

ACCOUNTABILITY

The Aboriginal Program Coordinator reports to the Programs Manager. Accountabilities include:

• coordinating and administering all matters related OSM’s Aboriginal Program.
• maintaining effectiveness and cost-efficiency in all activities while at all times meeting the highest standards of performance and best-practice;
• assisting in achieving the goals set out in the ACCESS Project related to: increased production volumes, cumulative job increases, increased total revenues by production companies, increased export revenues, increased digital interactive-related revenues, increased volume of interactive digital media productions, and promoting diversity in Manitoba’s screen-based industries.
• serving all of OSM’s organizational goals, with a particular focus on “Building the industry – Being a catalyst in helping our members build their businesses and careers.”

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience in program development and administration.
2. Familiarity with the screen-based industries in Manitoba.
3. Thorough knowledge of the Manitoba Aboriginal Screen-based Media community.
4. Familiarity with Aboriginal organizations, communities and diversity initiatives.

Interesting facts about FTM’s Work Experience Program

Did you know?

- This spring, FTM placed 19 trainees with eight different productions. These placements were subsidized by Film Training Manitoba.

- In addition to placing trainees, FTM gathered resumes from dozens of interested candidates and was able to assist over twelve of them find work on a production.

- FTM partners with local production companies to offer work experience training. These placements provide on-the-job training to both new and established crewmembers.

- There are different types of work experience placements, all designed to adapt to the various training needs of each individual production.

- Working closely with IATSE local 856 and the DGC Manitoba, FTM assesses candidates who are applying to the work experience program to find the right fit for them in a film environment. These assessments are based on the current needs of our industry, and the skill level of the candidates.

- In addition to our workshop training and community outreach program, FTM gathers information from the local industry and works hard to fill positions based on targeted departments in most need of crew development.

Beyond Borders Media Awards – Nomination Deadline September 15th, 2010

The Beyond Borders Media Awards honours journalists who cover stories about the sexual exploitation of children.

Work of all nominees must meet the following criteria:

Increased awareness – The submission provides the audience with accurate information that highlights the dynamics and realities of sexual exploitation. It may provide new insights or uncover underlying causes of the issue. The coverage may lead to further journalistic investigation of the story or support legislative or policy changes to better address the issue.

Quality of work – The submission is well researched and balanced in its approach. It is well written and in the case of broadcast, has high production values. It may use innovative or dramatic techniques that reinforce the message included in the coverage.

Respectful – The submission uses respectful language that does not denigrate or cast blame upon those victimized through sexual exploitation.

Submissions must meet the ethical guidelines for reporting on children set out by UNICEF. Submissions must represent the issue in a clear and balanced manner that does not sensationalize the abuse of children in any way.

Additional student award criteria:

  • Student must be enrolled in a recognized Canadian journalism/film studies or related program at the time of submission.
  • Written submissions no longer than 1,500 words.
  • Electronic submissions no longer than 30 minutes.
  • The submission may or may not have been published or broadcast.
  • Student must agree to Beyond Borders featuring winning entry on its website.

2010 Script Analysis Program with Marlene Rodgers

Film Training Manitoba and the National Screen Institute present
“2010 Script Analysis Program with Marlene Rodgers”

The Script Analysis Program with Marlene Rodgers is a unique opportunity for three selected Manitoba feature film projects to benefit from working with an experienced story editor, the goal being to develop a market-ready feature film project. Feature length scripts and treatments of all genres are eligible. Training will take place June through August, 2010.

WHO CAN APPLY

This competition is open to residents of Manitoba only. Solo writers, teams of two writers who are collaborating on a screenplay, or two person teams comprised of one writer and one producer are eligible to apply.  In any case, a maximum of two people per selected project will participate in the training.

Application Process

Applicants must apply with either a completed draft of a screenplay approximately 80 to 125 pages in length or with a treatment approximately 20 to 30 pages in length (max. 30 pp), plus two sample scenes; a completed application package (see next page); and a non-refundable submission fee of $95 for each script ($30 application fee $65 for the reader’s report), by noon Friday, April 23rd. Incomplete packages will not be considered. Submissions by fax or email will not be accepted. The market value of the training is $3000.00.

SELECTION PROCESS
Admission to the program will be highly competitive.  A jury comprised of three industry professionals who work for local production companies will read each submission. Applicants’ identities will not be revealed to the judges.  The three finalists will be determined in May. Following the judging period, the remaining applicants will receive a one-page reader’s report from the jury in June. These reports will provide insight to help writers improve their work. To ensure that you get the most out of your reports, make sure that the script is properly formatted and proofread it before sending it to us.  Please Note: All rights remain with the writer. FTM and NSI have no proprietary interest in the projects.

WHAT’S INVOLVED (schedule subject to change)

  1. First Script Consultation takes place at the beginning of June – Marlene will meet with the three finalists over a weekend.  Day One – meet as a group; Day Two – each writer or writer team meets individually with Marlene
  2. Writers will then have 4 weeks to work on a rewrite based on the notes received from the first Script Consultation*
  3. Second Script Consultation with Marlene takes place mid to late July. Note: these notes will be provided via phone or by email
  4. Writers will then have 4 weeks to work on a rewrite resulting from the second set of notes
  5. Scripts are delivered to Marlene for her final review in mid to late August.
  6. Table Read: end of August – Marlene returns to Winnipeg for a weekend to facilitate a table read of each script using actors
  7. Final Notes – following the table read Marlene will deliver final notes in group and individual discussions.

Writers should leave each session with a clear direction of how to proceed through the next draft.
*Note: If your treatment is selected we will expect a complete draft of the script submitted for the second script consultation.

ABOUT THE STORY EDITOR

Marlene Rodgers is a writer, producer, and story editor who loves to help filmmakers tell their stories.  Early in her career, she worked as a development executive at Canadian funding agencies and the CBC Movies and Mini-Series Unit.  As a story editor, Marlene has assisted countless screenwriters in bringing their vision to the page, and has mentored filmmakers at the NSI, the CFC and Praxis. She works primarily in the independent feature film sector, but also story edits on television series for the Food Network and W Network.  Marlene is currently developing her first feature film, SKIN TO SKIN, which is anticipated to shoot in 2010.
