FTM’S ABORIGINAL TRAINING PROGRAM
Helping bridge the needs of Manitoba’s film industry and the Aboriginal community.
The Aboriginal Training Program was created to help FTM achieve its goal of expanding the aboriginal workforce in the film industry, eventually building a name for Manitoba as the centre of excellence for aboriginal filmmaking.
The ATP provides a training opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in Manitoba’s film industry. The goal of this program is to assist new entrants to the industry in developing both life skills, and job skills, that will prepare them for careers in the film and television industry.
By creating on-the-job work experience placements on productions and with film related organizations, FTM makes one-on-one professional development training available to the participants of the program. FTM has also created the opportunity for participants to learn the process of developing and creating a production from start to finish with the program’s Production Shoot. Each participant is matched with a crewmember in his or her desired department for the duration of the shoot, creating opportunities for senior, established, crew to mentor emerging Aboriginal filmmakers.
Aboriginal Crew Development Project
*Funding for this program provided by Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development.
The Aboriginal Crew Development Program (ACDP) is work experience program that matches graduates of a secondary, or post-secondary, institution with production companies and/or film-related business such as equipment houses or production facilities.
FTM works closely with industry partners to identify departments where labour gaps exist and training is needed. Entry to this program is competitive and successful candidates will be selected based on their application, previous experience and an interview with the Training Coordinator. All successful applicants will be required to take an orientation session before their internship begins.
Applications are available for download on FTM’s website, www.filmtraining.mb.ca, or can be picked up in person at 100 – 62 Albert Street.
Outreach and Community Development
Film Training Manitoba regularly attends career fairs and trade shows both inside, and outside, of Winnipeg. The goal is to assist Aboriginal community members in developing their interest in Manitoba’s film community and to educate them on the training resources available to those interested.
An informative presentation on what a career in the film industry entails is also available to schools, including post-secondary institutions, upon request. FTM also holds this information session on a monthly basis.
Career Consultations
FTM Training Coordinators are available for one-on-one career consultations at the FTM office, by email or over the phone. These consultations may include (but are not limited too) topics such as training opportunities in film, working on film sets and in the production office, cultural awareness, and providing information regarding industry partners and the programs they offer.
