Demystifying Light & Sound for Public Events

Course Description:

9:00am to 12:00pm – Fundamentals of Event Sound with Andrew Yankiwski

During this first session, Andrew Yankiwski will provide instruction on a range of topics related to managing event sound.

Topics covered will include:

  • Planning for your event
  • Acoustics of the event space (What is the room size, shape, and ceiling height?)
  • Positioning of speaker systems
  • What type of event are you conducting (e.g. Speakers session, concerts etc.)
  • Managing the physical layout of the space (e.g. indoor or outdoor)
  • Power management (What type of power is available?)
  • Understanding sound leakage and room noise
  • Microphones (wireless and wire)

1:00pm to 4:00pm – Fundamentals of Event Lighting with João Holowka

During this second session, João Holowka will discuss the basics but effective lighting designs. This session will cover some of the latest techniques and tools such as LED lighting and wireless controls.

Topics covered will include:

  • Manipulating natural and available light
  • Natural lighting vs lighting gear
  • An overview of the basic gear
  • Safety
  • What videographers might need
  • Fundamentals of cabling and power distribution
  • Reviewing how the equipment works together
  • Owning vs renting gear
