FTM Partners with Gimli International Film Festival and DOC MB

The 2023 Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF) wrapped this past weekend. During the festival, Film Training Manitoba (FTM) partnered with DOC MB and GIFF to carry out Elizabeth Klinck’s Research Rights and Clearances: You See It, You Hear It, Let’s Clear It training session, which delved into the world of archival image research for film productions.

During Klinck’s session the participants learned about concepts such as “fair dealing” and “orphan works”, as well as ways to reduce costs and limit risks when including images, footage, and music in media projects.

“Klinck is a world-class expert in the areas of rights in film clearances which is a requirement for productions,” said Sydney Sabiston, FTM’s Training and Partnerships Manager. She added, “When FTM had the opportunity to partner with DOC MB and GIFF, we knew this was an amazing opportunity to provide excellent learning for our film community while being able to be on-site and supporting the festival.”

Eighteen participants attended the training session, which combined theory and practices for filmmakers, archivists, archival researchers, directors and producers. Handouts and a follow-up online consultation were also offered to the participants in addition to the training session.

Klinck has worked as a producer, editorial and visual researcher, and clearance specialist on numerous award-winning international documentary films and interactive projects that have garnered Emmy, Gemini, CSA, Peabody and Oscar awards. A graduate of Queen’s University, she has taught documentary research and development at Ryerson University in Toronto and has led research and rights clearance workshops at numerous international conferences.

“FTM appreciated this opportunity to partner and we wish to thank GIFF’s Alan Wong and Kevin Nikkel as well as the team at DOC MB.”

Throughout her career, Klinck has worked for HBO, PBS, the National Film Board of Canada, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, Discovery, History Television, CTV, Channel 4, Arte, ZDF, among other international broadcasters and independent production companies. Nominated for an Emmy in the Craft of Research and three times for Best Visual Researcher at the FOCAL Awards in the UK, Elizabeth has won the 2017, 2015, and 2014 and 2013 Canadian Screen Award, the 2015 Gemeaux Award, and the 2010 Gemini for Best Visual Research. She has won the Yorkton Golden Sheaf award, and was honored with the FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

Klink was honoured with the Canadian Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television’s Board of Director’s Tribute Award in 2019 for her body of archive producing work and her volunteerism both in Canada and abroad.
