About the course:
During this 90-minute ZOOM panel training session, long-serving FTM instructors Lesley Oswald and Dave Brown will engage in an in-depth overview of the best practices of firearm safety during film and television productions.
Often in productions, firearms are used as props to support storytelling but the use of these weapons is contingent on a wide collection of required standards to comply with Canadian law and safety.
As industry veterans, both instructors will cover a wide collection of topics and then engage with the participants in a 20-minute question and answer session.
Please note: Both instructors will not be discussing accidents or film industry incidents.
Some topics that will be covered:
· Canadian law with handling firearms.
· Who can handle firearms on set?
· What is a blank and what is a live round?
· How planning is conducted to manage safety with firearms.
· Duties and responsibilities of a firearms safety coordinator.
· How crewmembers, actors, and filmmakers can support safety while in production.
About the instructors:
Lesley Oswald has been in the film industry in Manitoba for over 40 years. During the course of her career, she has worked in the film and television industry as a Script Supervisor, Director, Producer, Line Producer, and Production Manager. She has worked on everything from Fred Penner’s Place and Tippi Tales to Siberia and Burden of Truth. Lesley has served as an FTM board chair, mentor and instructor and she developed FTM’s COVID-19 training course Smart Start.
Dave Brown is a Manitoba based Firearms Safety Coordinator, advises film and theatre productions on safety issues, trains cast on safety and handling techniques and supervises gun handling on film sets. He has worked with hundreds of talented cast and crew and been a firearms trainer to many of the top names in Hollywood. Known for his calm approach and professional manner, Dave has taught workshops across Canada and in Los Angeles. As well as being interviewed by numerous media outlets over the years, Dave recently appeared on the Discovery Channel to talk about firearms safety in film and helped develop the firearms safety training module for all IATSE film and theatre technicians across North America. In 2019, his knowledge and attention to detail culminated in one of the most important articles of his career, when Dave was asked to write about firearms safety in the film industry for American Cinematographer Magazine, a publication of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers (ASC)
